Being a working mum often feels like there are never enough hours in the day. Between work, school routines, meals, appointments, housework and family life, our own time can easily disappear somewhere in between.
Over the years, I’ve learned that I don’t need a perfectly organised life, I just need a few simple routines that make everyday life a little easier. These are some of the time-saving habits that genuinely work in our home, helping me feel less rushed and leaving a little more time for my family and myself.
1. Plan the Week, Not Every Minute
A little planning can prevent a lot of last-minute stress. Keep a weekly planner on the fridge so everyone knows what’s happening because sometimes the family needs more reminders than Mum!
Add appointments, school activities, work commitments and events, and write down who is responsible for each task. A phone or Outlook calendar with reminders is also great for keeping important dates organised.
Working Mum Tip: If everyone can see the plan, Mum doesn’t have to be everyone’s calendar.
2. Prepare Mornings the Night Before
This simple habit has made my mornings much less hectic. I prepare clothes, school bags, lunches, water bottles and work essentials the night before.
It only takes 10–15 minutes, but it makes mornings much calmer. My girls have also learned by watching me and now often prepare their own things: a simple way to build independence and responsibility.
Working Mum Tip: A few minutes tonight can give you a calmer start tomorrow.
3. Prep Ingredients, Not Whole Meals
Healthy, home-cooked meals can be challenging when you work full-time, but you don’t need to meal-prep everything.
On weekends, I prepare a few versatile foods. I might make vegetable patties one week and falafel the next for wraps, sandwiches or after-school snacks. I also prepare sprouts, paneer or dal batter for chilla, and sometimes bake muffins or make healthy bites for the week.
Having a few things ready makes putting together a healthy meal much easier on busy days.
Working Mum Tip: Prep the ingredients that make your week easier, not every meal.
4. Give Everyone Responsibilities
Running a home shouldn’t be Mum’s responsibility alone. Children can help according to their age by packing school bags, organising uniforms, helping with dishes and keeping their spaces tidy.
One thing that works well is having a separate laundry basket for each family member. Everyone can take their clean clothes, fold them and put them away.
And remember it doesn’t always have to be done exactly the way Mum would do it. Done is good enough!
Working Mum Tip: Let your family learn to do the things they can do themselves.
5. Use Small Pockets of Time
A few minutes each day can stop housework from piling up. The kitchen and bathrooms get used the most, so I focus on keeping these areas manageable.
I keep cleaning wipes in each bathroom for a quick sink and bench wipe every day or two, and a stick vacuum makes cleaning the floors quick and easy. I use the same approach in the kitchen small jobs as I go rather than leaving everything for my day off.
Our weekends are precious. I’d rather spend mine with family, doing something I enjoy or simply having some time for myself.
Working Mum Tip: A few minutes regularly can save you hours later and give you some of your weekend back.
6. Keep a Simple Weekly Meal Plan
Deciding “What should I cook tonight?” after a long workday can feel like another job. A simple weekly meal plan takes away that daily decision and makes grocery shopping easier too.
I plan a few meals for the week and check that I have the main ingredients in the pantry, fridge or freezer. It doesn’t need to be a strict meal plan can always be swapped around depending on how the day goes.
Knowing what I can cook and having the ingredients ready saves time, reduces last-minute grocery runs and makes home-cooked meals much easier on busy evenings.
Working Mum Tip: Plan the meals and stock the ingredients one less decision to make after a busy day.
